Besides these benefits, martial arts are also effective in creating and maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle for people of all ages. With so many ailments associated with an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle, martial art is a great form of workout to save you from deadly diseases like hypertension, heart attacks, diabetes, and obesity. Alongside physical health benefits, martial arts can improve your mental strength, change your perception of life, allow you to adapt to different situations, and improve your social life. This intense workout helps to boost self-confidence, increases awareness of eating healthy, improves your mental focus, teaches good morals, and improves your overall athleticism.

Many studies reveal that, in addition to the aforementioned benefits, martial art can boost your brain’s cognition too. So, partaking in this vigorous workout will surely boost many facets of your health from improving your physical health to enhancing your mental wellbeing. In this blog post, I have enlisted a few of the ways that martial arts contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

Martial art is a great form of workout:

In this fast-paced world, people are so occupied with their jobs that they couldn’t find time for any kind of physical activity and even if they start some traditional workout, they get bored with that. Moreover, the jobs are also of sedentary nature and involve almost no movements. Martial art is the best option we got if we want some quick results. It is a full-body intense workout that can make you fit briskly. Here are some great health benefits of this great workout,

Your Cardiac Health Improves:

Cardiovascular health is closely associated with your heart health, so, cardio health is a question of life and death for everybody. And martial arts, different drills involved in particular, play a vital role in improving your cardio health.

Martial Arts helps you Lose Weight:

Due to the development of unhealthy eating habits and the absence of physical activities, obesity is spreading rampant all over the globe and so are the ailments associated with it. But with martial arts training, you can improve your muscle mass and tone to improve your metabolism, which can contribute to weight loss.

Martial arts teaches you self-control:

Besides making your body strong, flexible, agile, and stable, martial arts help you in self-control. In martial arts classes, students are taught not to use their skills if they can avoid the situation because the skills of martial arts are not to hurt anyone.

You develop valuable cognitive and mental skills:

Martial arts are considered more than a typical workout because, in addition to improving physical abilities, they teach valuable cognitive and mental skills that contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Practicing martial arts daily can develop skills like self-control, discipline, focus, memory, and resilience.  Everything around us is going very fast and we are always trying to deal with deadlines. These deadlines and other life pressures cause mental stress, anxiety, and depression that affect our daily lifestyle, and martial arts come as a remedy to rescue us from these mental problems. To improve your overall wellbeing, you can apply all these skills and abilities learned from martial arts in all areas of life.

Martial arts also promote healthy eating:

People are so much into eating fast foods, intaking lots of sugar, and drinking carbonated water. This has resulted in many health issues for the myriad number of people. Many pieces of research reveal that mindful eating can have a significant impact on the overall health and life expectancy of a person. When you do martial arts, it cannot yield results if not supported by healthy eating. Martial art teaches the masses that food, besides being an essential component to fuel the body, is also an essential part of spiritual wellbeing too. This is why many world-class exponents stick to healthy nutrients and use the best protein powders for recovery.

Boosts psychological and social life:

Physical wellbeing is one great advantage of martial arts, but for many experts, the psychological benefits have even more significance. Martial boosts your mood, enhance emotional stability, learn discipline, respect for others, being humble, and truthful. This intense workout helps in releasing endorphins( the ‘feel-good’ hormone) that is proven to lift your mood. Additionally, at times, it becomes very tough for people to find peers with mutual interests and outlooks. Martial arts provide you with an opportunity to find like-minded people from all walks of life who have like you the same dedication to this art. The friends you make in the martial art gym will not confine to the gym only rather they will remain with you in the whole life.

If all these benefits are enough to convince you for signing up for a great martial art like wrestling, outfit yourself in proper wrestling singlets and wrestling shorts for practicing wrestling moves comfortably.

The Dalai Lama said, “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” These words have great wisdom which only adventurous souls could understand. Traveling has many rewards and the greatest of all is that you take a journey into yourself. You will discover things about yourself you may never have realized you have in the comfort of your home. Different people travel for different reasons; some travel to visit families living away and some travel to visit sacred places, some visit to understand different cultures and taste delectable cuisines, and other travel to see the beautiful landscapes of this gorgeous planet. No matter what purpose pushed you to travel, one thing is for sure you will create a myriad number of memories that will last a lifetime. Traveling is a great experience and when you do road-tripping to visit beautiful sceneries around you, it becomes more like a fun-house mirror.

Road trips are the ultimate way to do vacation and explore the rugged scenery, pristine landscapes, and sleep in open-air under the stars frequently. Besides the adventurous part, road-tripping save you a lot of dollars especially if you are road tripping on a motorcycle. To do a smooth road trip, you need to do a significant amount of planning, especially for long trips that span several days and cover hundreds of miles. And planning includes efficient packing as one of its major parts. Many people face lots of troubles on the way because of underpacking or overpacking. Here in this article, we will guide you about packing hacks and the 10 must include items for your road trip packing.

Your Documents:

Bringing essential documents is the topmost item for your road trip. Taking a passport and visa with you is very important if you are doing a cross country road trip. Keeping a driving license in your carry bag will save you from getting any ticket from the traffic police. Moreover, bring your vehicle registration document with you too. Although you have a mobile phone for GPS tracking but still bringing maps will help you in a situation when your phone lost coverage or you forget to charge your phone. Taking credit cards is also recommended for your road trip. All these documents are essential to avoid any document related inconvenience on the way.

First aid kit:

First aid kit becomes a life savior in accidents and other kinds of sicknesses including allergy, fever, fatigue, body pain, altitude sickness, stomach issue, malaria, headache, or flu. So, a first aid kit should be the second most important item on your road trip packing list. Your first aid kit should include all the potential items like band-aid, bandages, antiseptic, painkillers, stomach pills, malaria-related medicine, etc.

Your clothing:

It’s wise to bring multipurpose items in your clothing. Place 2 tops for one bottom in your motorcycle luggage bag. Don’t take more than one extra pair of shoes with you. As for socks and underwear, it’s better to bring more socks and underwear than the days you will spend on your trip. Moreover, for ideal packing put socks and underwear in your shoes and pack rolled clothes to save some space. Don’t forget to bring a jacket with you. And if you are road-tripping on a two-wheeler, rain gear is a must.

Your toiletries:

Toiletries should be included in essential items especially if you are planning to stay in a camp during your road trip. The toiletries list should include a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, sunscreen, makeup, face lotion, etc. To keep your clothes safe, pack these items in a toiletries bag.

A travel neck pillow:

This item is essential especially if your trip will last a few weeks or you are going to travel for some thousand miles. Spending hours on your vehicle will make you tired and a neck pillow will keep you relaxed and support you while you doze off during a short break.

A reusable water bottle:

Keeping yourself hydrated along the way will save you from getting fatigued. When you are pushing yourself to cover more miles, drinking water is the first thing you put to back burner. But if you are keeping a water bottle, you can sip some water without taking a stop. Some bottles can keep your hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold. These bottles are even more beneficial for you.

A camera:

You should bring a camera to capture beautiful landscapes and events you witness along the way. These pictures will remind you of those beautiful moments throughout your lives. You should keep travel diaries and travel albums for sharing experiences you had during your traveling time.

A tool kit:

When you are road-tripping, you must keep in mind that at places you won’t find a mechanic in the event of breaking down your vehicle. So, keeping some basic tools with you will save you in such situations. Moreover, when you a toolkit, you will be able to test some basic things about your vehicle every day before hitting the road.

Bring some spares:

It is recommended to bring spare keys of your vehicle along with engine oil, spark plugs, race cables, etc. You might not find them if the next town is a hundred miles away. Moreover, the aforementioned items are the ones that need changing the most.

Camping equipment:

Your road trip will not be as adventurous as you wish it to be if you don’t bring camping equipment with you. So, you must bring a small tent, sleeping bag, and a torch with you if you wish to taste the ultimate adventure.

The bottom line:

Traveling is the most cherishable hobby that allows you to meet new people, see new cultures, taste delicious local foods, and learn the history of different places. Roadtripping is even more enjoyable but it needs detailed planning especially about what to pack and how to pack. The aforementioned packing items are the ones you will surely need on your road trip. You can pack according to the packing capacity of your vehicle; a car trunk can keep a lot of luggage while a street bike luggage bag of your motorcycle could keep far fewer items. You should make the list according to the packing capacity your vehicle got.

Using fake nails is one of the easiest ways to follow on nail trends. I believe that some public figures use such especially on photo shoots. There are actually quite a number of ways to apply fake nails, either using nail glue, nail adhesive, or using gel polish with the help of the UV / LED lamp. Since I don’t have the lamp yet, I prefer using nail glue because I don’t think the adhesive can make the attachments longer.

I got the idea of using fake nails from a friend last year and because I have short fingers and my natural nails are too flimsy to have them long. You can have the entire service at any salons or nails spa, however, it will cost you more than five hundred. Also, you will most likely have to wait for two hours or more for the procedures to be done. So if you don’t have that much time I suggest buying fake nails on your own.

Fake Nails
Fake Nails

The application is really handy and it will only take less than ten minutes even for beginners. Plus, the usual price for the faux nails you can find even online is less than three hundred pesos (Php300). Which means you can save more than half of the cost when you go to nail spas. I got mine around two hundred pesos (Php200). That’s a set of twenty-four fake nails, nail glue, cuticle stick, and nail adhesive. Most fake nails you can find online are already pre-designed so you only have to choose the design or nail arts. There are also sizes and shapes to choose from, though you can always reshape and resize the nails pretty easily.

Here are the steps on how to apply fake nails at your own convenient home:

  1. Wash your hands and make sure that everything around the nail bed is completely dry.
  2. Clean off any nail polish.
  3. Buff the surface of your natural nails to roughen it and clean it.
  4. Push the cuticle back gently using the cuticle stick.
  5. Arrange the nails according to what is suitable to which fingers.
  6. Put a dot of nail glue on to the back of the fake nail and one on your natural nail.
  7. Place the faux nail just above the cuticle. Keep it straight.
  8. Press down onto the nail bed. Keep pressure applied for 15 to 20 seconds.

Faux nails can be reused only when you don’t mess up, so make sure to apply them precisely.

Have you tried applying fake nails on your own? How’s the experience? xoxo

Lately, I noticed that the hair on top of my forehead is getting thinner which for me looks weird since I have a natural thick hair. I’m blaming aging, but I’m not that old yet so I thought maybe this is something I should be concerned with. Fortunately, last week of April, Edge Naturale reached out to me introducing their very own product. The edge enhancement cream which basically helps to regrow edges. I was only able to respond to them around May but good thing that the offer was still up at that time.

It was such perfect timing. I actually planned of doing a DIY hair and scalp treatment when the pandemic started. Even bought a potted Aloe Vera plant for that. When I received Edge Naturale’s follicle enhancer, I was pretty excited to give it a try right away.

Here’s some information about the product:

Edge Naturale Follicle Enhancer

Follicle Enhancer is constructed of natural oils, peppermint, and coconut milk. It cools and soothes the scalp while stimulating follicles for incredibly fast restoration.

Water Carbomer Stearic Acid Petrolatum Glyceryl Stearate Glycerin Cetyl Alcohol Mineral Oil Peppermint Oil Argan Oil Avocado Oil Niacin Castor Oil Jojoba Oil Coconut Milk Extract Phenoxyethanol (and) Ethylhexylglycerin.

My 2 cents:

I like that this does not give a greasy feeling on the scalp. A little tingly though but the mint smell is a plus. It’s been a week of using this product and so far I can feel and see a small difference. Slow progress is still progress. Compare to the local brand I was able to try last year, which unfortunately gave me an allergy, this one from Edge Naturale is really worth your money.

I’m giving this a month or 3 weeks at least to get a full restoration. I’ll be updating this post once I finish the entire jar. xoxo

You can buy one here: Edge Naturale Follicle Enhancer

This is how it looks now. Better than ever. I can now wear my hair down confidently without worrying about ugly lines and edges!

Have your tried this product already? Let me know if you did. xo

Positive – either this is a good thing today or not, that I am not sure. Earlier this year, sad news hit the world, the existence of COVID-19. And what more shocking was, the first positive case was where I currently live. Everything suddenly changed. The usual is no longer a thing.

I thought the situation got better. I thought. But. It was mid of March when my son and I went to Cebu for an entrance exam at a school where he’s supposed to enroll for the school year 2020-2021, and a closed border between Cebu and Negros island was imposed. We had to hurry back to Negros since all of our belongings are still here. I don’t know it would take long or even longer before we can move back to Cebu. What’s more difficult is that we only have ourselves. Yes, just me and my six-year-old son. This also means that accessing our essentials is even harder. I have to tag him along all the time.

Today’s uncertainty made me realize so many things. One is that I wasn’t scared for my life. I wasn’t scared of death. I am just VERY scared that it would hurt so much. What if I’ll get sick and my son would be left here alone? Who to ask help? My son was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease two years ago and had to stay in the hospital for ten days. I remember how it felt looking at him very sick. It wasn’t a pandemic but it definitely turned my life upside down.

The quarantine basically changed the way we live our lives. Routines have changed as if we’re living in a parallel world. This challenged me as a mother. Everything has to be done by me. The cooking – because most of the karenderyas are closed. This made me an instant chef, which of course I’m proud to say I’ve cooked different recipes in less than a year. Lol. The teaching – because my son said I’m his mom and not his teacher. The learning – because instead of binge-watching KDramas on Netflix (which I did for the whole month of April and a bit of May), I resorted to enrolling myself in online classes, paid and mostly free. Because what better way to help a depression fighter than to feed the mind with the knowledge that might actually contribute to future success.

Life has taught me so much, much more when I became a mother. Don’t procrastinate. Something I need to put in mind always. Never ever put off until tomorrow what we can do today. Later might be never. Make time. No one is really busy. We always have time for anything. Strive for patience. We all have our boiling point but losing patience can mean regretting it later. Breathe deeply. Be positive. Feed your mind with positive thoughts. Positive thinking always means a positive life. Wear a smile. It’s contagious. As simple as that. Gratitude. Be thankful for every blessing. Be thankful for life’s ups and downs. Pray. For me, God is real. And by clinging to him makes my life even more wonderful.

What keeps me moving forward? Life is beautiful. Motherhood is beautiful. By just looking at my son made me think I must have made something good in my life to deserve a blessing like this. I am indeed very lucky. And nothing can’t take that away from me.

Love, love!

This story is an entry to ComCo Southeast Asia’s “Write to Ignite Blogging Project”. The initiative is a response to the need of our times, as every story comes a long way during this period of crisis. Igniting and championing the human spirit, “Write to Ignite Blog Project” aims to pull and collate powerful stories from the Philippine blogging communities to inspire the nation to rise and move forward amidst the difficult situation. This project is made possible by ComCo Southeast Asia, co-presented by Eastern Communications and sponsored by Electrolux, Jobstreet, and Teleperformance.

Life is always on a roller coaster ride. Bad things. Good things. It happened. The important thing here is you get to enjoy every ride no matter how bumpy it can be. Earlier this year, I had struggles updating my blog because I hardly had enough time sitting in front of the laptop, typing everything I’d like to share. And whenever I had one, some important personal matters will get in between. And I, as a blogger has had inner conflicts, losing the passion to blog, is one. Do I need validation to continue doing what I started six years ago? Maybe!

Some time summer of this year, I lost Goddess In Disguise. To those of you who do not know, Goddess In Disguise is my blog’s first name. It breaks my heart because how can I took for granted something that has been a part of me for long.  I, unfortunately, forgot to renew the domain even with the grace period given to me. I had a little to no chance of connecting to the internet for roughly three months. I was probably reminded but I could not trace the email. Worst, the redemption is too much for me already. I might need more years to earn such big amount. And believe me, I tried the best I can to haggle. Literally. I spent most of my nights regretting, blaming myself and crying. Maybe I should just forget about blogging and move on! But then, why should I? I am strong, right? That’s how I see myself. And because when you love doing something, you’ll do it no matter the odds. Everything must go on.

Then, there’s Che Goes On. Though I moved the contents of Goddess In Disguise, I know I will have to start from scratch. But that won’t hinder this passion to blog. So much of that story anyway! Last year, I was one of the finalists of Best Cebu Blogs Awards under Personal category. And this year, I am (again) shortlisted as one of the finalists for . . . drum roll, please, Style category! Unbelievable, I know. To be honest, fashion/style is really one of the reasons I started blogging. I used to have a Multiply account where I shared all the fashion stuff and shoots I had back then. And when I had the chance to finally start having my own blog, I grabbed the opportunity.

I was teary-eyed when I received an e-mail from the team. And puzzled at the same time because I can’t imagine having me lined-up with those fashion bloggers who posted their OOTD’s almost every day across the internet. I love dressing up. I love glamming myself. I love trying out different outfit styles. And I love experimenting every trend today. And I thought after giving birth that I may not have the chance to do what I love, because I do not know. Maybe because I am more into becoming a full-time and hands-on mother. Or maybe I’m just hesitant because of the physical change during and after pregnancy. Having said that, I ventured into women’s apparel business last year to indulge style cravings. If I can’t do it to myself, maybe I can share it with others, I thought. Small but it’s kinda satisfying.

Anyway, the Best Cebu Blogs Awards (BCBA), founded by Mark Monta on December of 2008, is a yearly awarding ceremony of Cebu-based bloggers. Being part of the list of finalists is already a huge honor for me and my blog. I must have done something good and right to deserve this recognition. Win or lose, being recognized and being able to keep this blog up is already winning. Congratulations to all the finalists. I hope to see you all at the awarding night. xo

It’s often hard to imagine something as primitive as sending marketing letters via mail still continues to be effective. In fact, everyone from local retails stores to large multinational brands utilizes this time-tested marketing strategy to get more eyes on their products and offers. Even new age marketing gurus complement their online marketing efforts with a solid direct mail campaign. This begs the simple question, why are direct postcard campaigns still relevant? Following are 5 reasons why.Postcard

People Still Check Their Letterboxes: You have heard people saying, “Emails are going to make direct mails obsolete one day.” The thing is people have been saying that ever since Email services first came into being. Decades have passed, and we are still using letters and letterboxes. As long as people continue to check their mailboxes, there is no reason for direct postcard campaigns to lose their effectiveness.

They Create an Equal Playing Field: When a recipient receives a marketing postcard, it really doesn’t matter who is it from. As long as the offer is good, and the design is attractive, it can create a positive impact. In this age where marketing space is increasingly becoming more and more expensive, big-box retailers and large multinationals dominate the billboards, online banners, and TV spots. Postcard campaigns manage to create an equal playing field. It gives local businesses a chance to compete with chain stores without having to spend thousands of dollars on

Cheaper Than Other Marketing Strategies: The cost of a postcard marketing campaign is far less than any other marketing strategy. The major expenses being buying die cut plastic postcards and postal charges. Barring these, businesses might need to spend some money buying mailing lists from non-competing local businesses. The overall cost is so low, that even small local businesses routinely use postcard marketing strategy to great effect.

Postcard Campaigns Can Be Personalised: Unlike mass Emails and generic banner ads, postcards can be personalised for each and every recipient. Businesses do this all the time. They often attach personalised messages for all customers to get better conversion. A simple friendly message like “Hey Dave, thanks for your business last Sunday, here’s something you might be interested in” can really encourage customers to make a positive move.

People Growing Tired of Spam Emails: When was the last time you visited the spam section of your Email? Never, right? Thanks to the growing number of spam marketing mails, even great Email campaigns fail to get the proper mileage. Tired of intrusive pop-ups and an endless barrage of Emails, people have started to appreciate direct mail campaigns.

You don’t feel any older. You’re still youthful and filled with vitality on the inside. You have dedicated your life to taking care of yourself because you know that your body is your temple. That means staying active and making wise choices about what kind of fuel you put into your system. Your skin has been a priority as well as you protect yourself from exposure to the sun every day. In spite of doing everything the way that you should, the years have continued to march on. They’re making their mark on your face, the most noticeable part of you. Those fine lines and webbing of wrinkles can’t be ignored. Your skin has lost its firmness and elasticity. It’s starting to droop, making you look tired all the time. Worse yet, it’s making you feel old every time you catch your reflection. You’re ready for a change. A plastic surgeon can help you with facelift surgery. There’s only one problem. You want it to look natural.

Avoid the Windswept Look

While a facelift is an effective and popular approach to combat the visible effects of aging, you want it to look like it is natural. The procedure is meant to tighten up that loose skin just enough that it no longer sags and you smooth away those wrinkles. When facelift surgery is performed by a master surgeon, the end result will be a face that looks like someone has turned back the hands on the clock of time to reclaim his or her youth. However, there are times when the results are too extreme. making a patient look like he or she has been caught in a windstorm that has made the face look overdone. The right plastic surgeon can help you to avoid this problem.

Taking a Different Approach is the Best Place to Start

The key to a successful facelift is to avoid severe changes that result in an unappealing, unnatural outcome. The skin should not look like someone has yanked it back, forcing the eyes to be wide open, the brows to be raised as if in surprise, and the mouth stuck in a strange smile that looks forced. While your plastic surgeon can help you to soften the effects of aging with cosmetic surgery, no one can actually take you back to your younger years. No one should tighten the skin to such a degree that the face looks like a mask. One of the mistakes that many patients make is in asking a surgeon to go overboard when it comes to how tight the skin will be. Another issue that can cause a problem is using general anesthesia during a facelift. This causes the face to relax completely to the point that the face relaxes completely. This lack of muscle tone can make it difficult to judge how tight the skin should be drawn back in order to have the desired effect. If your plastic surgeon uses intravenous sedation combined with local anesthetic in targeted areas, you are more likely to get an unforgettable lift that restores the natural contours of your face without going to extremes.

How Can Intravenous Sedation and Local Anesthesia Help You

Your surgeon can use intravenous sedation to ensure that you are relaxed without putting you completely under the power of general anesthesia. Local anesthesia will be administered in the areas where incisions are necessary. If you are having a mini facelift that is focusing on the skin around your jaw, your surgeon will focus on the area around your ears to make small incisions. At that point, your muscles and skin will be shifted in order to tighten up the skin. Any excess skin can be trimmed away. However, your surgeon should never take too much or your face will not look natural. If you are having a facelift that focuses on the middle region of your face, including the cheekbones and the jaw, your incisions will be in the same area as with a mini facelift, but the shift of your skin and muscle will vary in order to eliminate excess folds of skin that are drooping around your mouth. If you have a brow lift, this will focus on the forehead and your incisions will be made at your hairline. For a full facelift that focuses on all areas of your face, Incisions will be made at the hairline and around the ears as your surgeon works on sculpting the tissues in your face to freshen up your appearance. Your surgeon may address removal of excess fat with liposuction or add more volume to your face by performing a fat transfer. By using a local anesthetic for all incisions made during your procedure, it will be possible to make changes that are not too extreme because your muscle tone will still be responsive during your procedure.

Is a Facelift Right for You?

Typical candidates for facelift surgery are in their forties to their seventies. If you are seriously considering a cosmetic procedure for your face, your surgeon will evaluate several factors to determine if it will work for you. Your skin must still have enough elasticity to respond well to surgery. You will also need to have a good bone structure that will enhance the definition of your face after surgery. If you have sagging skin, a facelift is likely to be right for you. Your health will be considered as well as your surgeon ensures that surgery is a safe alternative for you.

Travel can provide an excellent opportunity to let your hair down, relax, and enjoy the wonders of life as they present themselves to you on the open road.

Seeing new places and meeting new people can be extremely positive and encouraging experiences, and can expand your horizons and deepen your sense of your own place in the world. When you do return home, you’re likely to find that you appreciate your ordinary life all the more because of the brief time you’ve spent away from it.

In short, travel is great, with many downsides and few if any drawbacks. Whether you’re looking for an HDB for rent, or are backpacking from place to place, there’s a lot that the experience can offer.

Perhaps one of the greatest possible benefits of travel, however, is its ability to help you detach yourself from the concerns of your everyday life, and truly “discover” yourself in a deep and meaningful way. If you’ve approached your trip in the proper manner, you may find that your entire life changes subtly, but positively, as a result of your journey.

Here are some things you can do to help discover yourself when traveling.

Take a notebook with you and keep a daily travel journal

The simple act of writing is one of humanity’s most powerful tools for introspection, reflection on deep and existential topics, and — ultimately — self-analysis and discovery.

You may not be a natural writer at heart, and in fact, you may not even enjoy the experience of writing very much. Nonetheless, there are some real benefits to packing a notebook and pen next time you’re going traveling and using them every day to help structure and understand your thoughts and reflect on your experiences.

The first exercise you should adopt — and easily one of the most beneficial — is to keep a daily travel journal, both as a record of your experiences, and also as a way of summarising and analyzing your daily experiences to yourself.

This doesn’t have to take the form of an intensive novel-writing mission. Rather, you can begin by simply writing out a line or two each evening (or the next morning), detailing your experiences and reflecting on your thoughts or feelings about them. You could even note down any broader thoughts or considerations that might be playing on your mind in general.

This may seem like a bit of a pointless exercise at first, but don’t underestimate the degree to which humans structure and organize their thoughts by clearly articulating them. Writing is one of the best overall ways of achieving this.

Depending on how you choose to record your travel journal, you might also end up with a series of fascinating stories and anecdotes preserved in time, that you can reflect on fondly years later, share with friends or family, or even use as the basis for a future book.

In addition to writing your journal entries, you should also take the time to express yourself on the blank page in any way you want, as the inspiration comes to you. This could involve writing short, spur-of-the-moment poems while sitting in front of a beautiful landscape, or it could involve sketching or drawing as the mood takes you.

Either way, keep a pen and notebook with you when traveling.

Take some books that help you to understand yourself, or think about big issues

When traveling, people will often pack pretty lighthearted novels and airport-paperbacks, if they’re packing any books at all. There is nothing wrong with reading these kinds of books, of course, but they generally won’t have a dramatic, immediate impact on you in terms of helping you to deepen your understanding of yourself, or the direction you’re heading in, in life, or get a handle on deeper considerations of what your ultimate values and goals are.

In order to ensure that you have the greatest possible chance of exercising positive self-reflection on your travels, identify some books that you think will help you come to terms with yourself, or address a real issue in your life, or at least cause you to think deeply, and then take one or two of those with you on your travels.

Self-help books are a great option in this regard — particularly if you’ve vetted them carefully and aren’t just grabbing anything from that shelf of your local bookstore — but works of philosophy, or psychology, or even business organization and productivity, can fill the same role.

The key thing is that you do some reading on your travels, on a subject that gives you real food for thought and has the potential to change your life in some way.

Travel is one of the best times to read such books, as you are away from your usual environment, and are detached enough from your everyday concerns that you can begin to view your ordinary life from a “bird’s eye” perspective, rather than being too caught up in it directly, to see the forest for the trees.

Use the trip as an opportunity to cut down on some of your usual vices

Most people have certain vices which they indulge in on a regular basis, and these aren’t always as dramatic as addictions to hard drugs.

In fact, for many people today, their “vices” can be things which don’t immediately seem to present a major issue, or which might otherwise be harder to pin down. An addiction to caffeine, a tendency to gamble, or occasional binge-drinking, can all seem reasonable if kept within the normal boundaries and not allowed to “spill over” into obviously problematic behavior.

But even something as innocuous as a caffeine addiction can cause an array of underlying health conditions, psychological, and lifestyle problems that might be hard to spot at first glance but which can nonetheless add up to a series of profoundly negative effects over time.

For example; over-use of stimulants such as caffeine prompts your body to dramatically increase its production of stress hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline. When these hormones are produced in the right quantities, at the right times — typically when there’s a real threat that you’ve got to face — they serve an important role in protecting you and guiding you safely through life.

When these hormones are produced in excess or are produced too frequently, or for prolonged periods of time, on the other, the consequences can be devastating, and may include — reduced cognitive function (as the brain struggles to regenerate itself, or develop new neurons), reduced organ health (as organs such as the adrenal glands or thyroid are completely over-taxed and stop working as they should) and more.

If, on the other hand, your vices are more linked to indulgent habits such as eating processed foods, or surfing social media all day, the effects may be less explicitly physical but are still more than capable of causing you serious problems.

Perhaps one of the most negative effects of being ruled by your vices is the simple fact that they distort your view of what is and isn’t normal, and make it difficult for you to organize your life in a clearheaded way.

Cutting back on some of your vices while traveling — or ideally, shortly before traveling — can help to give you the clearheaded awareness that you need in order to face life head on and deal with its challenges.
